Bricklaying

Brickwork you can still be proud of in ten years

Brickwork is the one trade on a build that cannot be quietly fixed later. A wandering perp line, a missed expansion joint or a cavity full of mortar droppings is either lived with or knocked down — so it is worth having laid by people who set out properly on day one.

All bricklaying work is quote based and assessed on site conditions, access and required finish. We work with builders, owner builders, developers and homeowners, and we are equally happy laying a full house or a letterbox.

  • Straight lines, consistent joints and clean faces across the whole build
  • Compliant footings, drainage and expansion jointing — not just the visible course
  • Bricks, sand, cement, lintels and hardware supplied from our own yard
  • Coordination with the other trades on site so the program does not slip

What we build

From a full two storey house down to a set of front steps.

Our new house bricklaying service includes:

  • Full external brickwork
  • Garage and porch brickwork

  • Cavity cleaning and compliance checks
  • Coordination with other trades on site

We ensure straight lines, clean joints and a professional finish across the entire build.

Brick Fences & Boundary Walls

Strong, durable brick fences built to Australian standards. Suitable for front boundaries, side fences and property upgrades.

Options include:

  • Standard brick
  • Rendered finish
  • Pier and infill designs
  • Custom heights and styles

A brick front fence is the first thing anyone sees of a property and the last thing that gets replaced. Pier spacing and footing depth are what decide whether it is still plumb in twenty years.

Retaining Walls (Brick & Block)

We construct retaining walls for garden areas, level changes and structural support. Built for long term stability and compliance.

Service includes:

  • Footings
  • Drainage installation
  • Brick / block wall construction
  • Capping and finishing

Most failed retaining walls in Melbourne failed for one reason: water with nowhere to go. Drainage behind the wall is not an optional line item on our quotes.

  • Brick letterboxes
  • Steps
  • Garden edging
  • Small feature walls

Small jobs are usually scheduled between larger builds, so tell us if you have a date to hit and we will fit it to the program.

How a bricklaying job runs

Four steps, no surprises between them.

  1. 1

    Send plans or photos

Plans and elevations for a build; photos and rough measurements for a fence, wall or repair. Anything that tells us the scale.

  2. 2

    Site assessment

Access for a truck and a mixer, ground conditions, levels, and what the footing has to do. This is what moves a bricklaying price.

  3. 3

    Itemised quote

Bricks, sand, cement, lintels, hardware and labour, set out separately so you can see what you are paying for.

  4. 4

    Laid, cleaned and checked

Cavities cleaned, joints struck, expansion joints in the right places, and the site left tidy for the next trade.

Why Oak Garden

We are a supply yard that installs, not a contractor that buys in. That changes what a job costs and how fast it moves.

Compliant workmanship

Lintels, expansion joints, cavity clearance and articulation done to the standard, not to whatever is quickest.

Materials from our own yard

Sand, cement, lime, lintels and bricklayer hardware come off our shelves — one supplier, one delivery, no site delays.

We work to a program

Builders get a crew that turns up on the date it said it would and coordinates with the trades either side of it.

Drainage taken seriously

Every retaining wall is built with the drainage that keeps it standing, not just the bricks that make it look finished.

Clean finish

Faces cleaned down, joints consistent, mortar off the paving. The finish is part of the job, not an extra.

Owner builders welcome

If you are running your own build we will tell you what we need on site and when, in plain terms.

Bricklaying — common questions

If yours is not here, ask it in the form below.

Do you work for builders and developers?

Yes — new residential builds, single and double storey, to a construction program. We also work directly for owner builders and homeowners.

Do you supply the bricks?

We supply the sand, cement, lime, lintels and bricklayer hardware from our own yard and can arrange bricks to your selection. If your builder has already ordered bricks we lay those.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?

In most Victorian councils a wall over one metre, or one near a boundary or a structure, needs approval and often an engineer's design. We will tell you when we quote if we think yours does — building it first and asking later is the expensive order.

How long does a brick fence take?

A typical front boundary fence is a few days including footings and curing time. Weather matters: mortar and rain do not mix, and we will not lay through it just to keep a date.

Can you match existing brickwork?

Usually. Send a photo of the existing wall with your enquiry — we can match most common Melbourne bricks and mortar colours, and we will say plainly if yours is one that cannot be matched.

Do you do repairs and small jobs?

Yes. Letterboxes, steps, feature walls, damaged courses and small repair work are all quoted the same way as larger jobs.

Request a bricklaying quote

Send us your plans, photos or measurements for a fast bricklaying quote.

  • No obligation. A quote is a quote — there is nothing to sign.
  • Photos help enormously. Most jobs can be priced without a site visit if we can see them.
  • We quote on your site. Access, levels and conditions all change a price, so we look before we quote.
